On Saturday February 10th, NBEF hosted their latest career cluster event for mental and behavioral health careers. This program was hosted by NBEF’s own Edson Martinez, MSW, LSW, who works as a school social worker for the Elizabeth Public Schools and Gessele Lima who works for Rutgers University Behavioral Health Center in Piscataway.
They engaged participants in discussions on the pathways to a career in mental health along with rolling out an actual case study from their experiences in the field. Those in attendance included high school seniors, college/grad school students and young professionals (all from New Brunswick) who are pursuing mental and behavioral health careers.
The overall goal of building the Mental and Behavioral Health Career Cluster is to provide guidance, training, resources and contacts for members of NBEF’s College and Young Professionals Network who are majoring/or majored in Social Work and Psychology. Through this Cluster, networking and mentoring connections will be made involving students and young professionals to better understand what a career in mental health entails.
Part 2 of the Mental and Behavioral Health Career will resume at the end of March with a panel of mental health providers sharing their knowledge of hands-on experience in the field. More information will be circulated soon.
NBEF is excited to have launched this career cluster as we have found more students interested in working in the mental health field. We hope to expand this cluster and create additional career clusters in the future to continue to foster a home-cooking approach within our NBEF Network.
