With funding by NBEF, through it’s Innovative Teacher Grants Program, 37 New Brunswick High School students experienced the McCarter Theatre’s production of Regina Taylor’s “Crowns” which is a heartwarming, foot-tapping show adapted from the book by Michael Cunningham and Craig Marberry.

“Crowns” is  a coming-of-age story that centers on a 17-year-old-girl, who is sent to live with her grandmother in South Carolina  after the tragic death of her brother on the Chicago streets. The teen finds connection among a community of resilient woman in their church hats —– weaving together faith, fashion and family.

“My students could not say enough about how they were moved by the acting, singing, dancing, music, symbolism and theater effects.  This opportunity has opened so many teaching moments as we review the craft and the message of the play.”

— Christine Patterson, NBHS Honors English Teacher

Since 2008, NBEF has partnered with PNC Bank, Magyar Bank and other organizations to provide funding for over 100 projects and activities implemented by New Brunswick Public School teachers in classrooms and after-school programs.
