NBEF administered workshops for New Brunswick High School’s (NBHS) AVID Program seniors at the Middlesex College – New Brunswick Center on May 18, 2023, and AVID juniors at NBHS on May 31, 2023. These special initiatives, sponsored by New Brunswick Tomorrow (NBT), engaged students in topics that helps prepare them for college and career pathways.

The workshops were designed and facilitated by members of NBEF’s College & Young Professional Network’s Training Team. This group of NBHS and New Brunswick Health Sciences Technology High School (NBHSTHS) alumni included Edson Martinez, MSW, LSW (NBHS Class of 2011), Jessica Varela, MBA (NBHSTHS Class of 2007), and Tahj Burnette, MSW, LSW (NBHS Class of 2014) led the workshop for the seniors; and Ayanna Slacum and Hugo Alexis Martinez, both from the NBHS Class of 2021 administered the session for the juniors.

The training for the AVID seniors was titled “Pathway to First Day.” During the workshop, the NBEF facilitators outlined the important milestones students can expect over the summer leading up to their first day of college. These checkpoints included applying for FAFSA, attending new student orientation, receiving your first term bill, dorming/commuting tips, etc. Students were also engaged in discussion regarding their hopes and fears in anticipation of starting college.

The workshop for the AVID juniors was called “A Goal without a Plan is just a Dream” where they were exposed to SMART Goal planning, participated in hands-on scenarios for planning out goals, and created their own goal map. This workshop served as an additional motivation and encouragement for students to believe in themselves.

This programming marked the third year that NBT partnered with NBEF to implement exposures for NBHS AVID students that focuses on College Readiness and Career Pathways; and is part of a multi-faceted collaboration between the two organizations. A key initiative of this exciting partnership are 10 college scholarships (totaling $12,000.00) awarded annually to NBHS AVID seniors that NBT is sponsoring through NBEF’s Scholarship Program. After 3 years, NBT has funded a total of $36,000.00 in scholarships presented to 36 AVID seniors at NBEF Awards Galas.

Stay tuned for what the NBEF and NBT collaboration has planned to equip and empower New Brunswick youth in the future!!!
