NBEF held its eighth “Self-Care & Empowerment Event” on November 20, 2025, as part of its Mental Health Platform for its College & Young Professional Network.

This virtual forum featured Dr. Jasmine Santiago, PHD, ACS, NCC, LPC, a dynamic presenter who teaches ways to manage mental health and wellness. Dr. Santiago is a national board-certified bilingual licensed professional counselor and the founder and clinical director of “Therapy for the Culture.”

She has extensive experience in providing culturally responsive therapy that caters to the unique needs and experiences of BIPOC communities. Her passion for cultural understanding has led her to travel to over twenty-three countries, immersing herself in different cultures and learning from their knowledge. This experience has enriched her work, enabling her to incorporate a global perspective in her practice. She firmly believes that understanding and appreciating different cultures is essential in providing effective therapy that respects and honors the diversity of her clients.

During the session, Dr. Santiago covered:
—- Understanding what mental health is (and isn’t) in everyday life
—- Recognizing common signs of stress, anxiety, and burnout in ourselves and others
—- How culture and community can both support and sometimes complicate mental health
—- Practical, evidence-based tools for managing overwhelming emotions and building resilience

A post survey administered by NBEF showed: “100% of the participants would like to see more NBEF Events like this one.” Some of the feedback shared by attendees was as follows:

“Therapy is a viable option, regardless of my personal background/culture. Stigma should not be a limit, but rather a motivation to change the narrative. Thank you, NBEF, for the amazing presentation!”

“Tonight’s event taught me not to limit myself and to take advantage of different opportunities (even if there is a fear of rejection) as well as know how to set healthy boundaries with not just ourselves but with others.”

Thus, NBEF will continue to implement mental health programming to help strengthen the overall well-being (including but not limited to physical, social, and emotional) of the students and young professionals in our Network as they strive for success with their education, careers, and in life.
