Zebras Have First New High School In More Than 45 years

The “new” New Brunswick High School opened on January 4, 2010. The 400,000 square foot building replaced the former high school on Livingston Avenue that opened in 1964.

The new NBHS is located on a 26-acre site at 1000 Somerset Street and can accommodate up to 2,000 students. It was designed to maximize space and be flexible enough that every area can have an instructional purpose. The two-and three-story school has four academic wings and a science area, plus a 660-seat cafeteria, a 1,000-seat auditorium and a 2,000-seat gymnasium.

The school was built to accommodate six new themed institutes that students select as they enter their junior year. The institutes focus on law and public safety; recreation, hospitality and consumer service; math, science and engineering; international business and finance; health sciences; and fine, visual and performing arts. Students in these institutes will get hands-on learning experiences in “state-of-the-art” instructional spaces, including a kitchen and mini-restaurant, a television production studio, and an early childhood education center.

In addition, the new building incorporates the use of new classroom technologies such as LCD projectors and interactive SMART boards. Courtyards in between the academic wings were developed to maximize natural light. Automatic dimming systems in each room automatically lower the electric light when natural light is sufficiently lighting the room.

Many NBHS alumni have toured the new high school, in particular as a part of their class reunion activities.
