THE N. FRED BROWN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The late N. Fred Brown graduated from New Brunswick High School in 1946. He then went on to serve in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Japan. Upon returning home from active duty, he attended Waynesburg College in Pennsylvania from 1948 to 1951 graduating with a major in Accounting and a minor in Mathematics, having also earned teaching credits at Carmichael High School in Southwest, Pennsylvania.

Mr. Brown began his career at Johnson and Johnson in New Brunswick, NJ on the staff of the statistical department. He was subsequently informed by fellow New Brunswick Presbyterian Church members and NBHS teachers, Ester and Wycliffe McCracken that a NBHS Mathematics teacher opening was available and he was encouraged to apply. With the full support of his college sweetheart and new wife, Mary, Mr. Brown applied for the job at his alma mater and began a rewarding and distinguished teaching career at NBHS spanning 35 years. His love for the game of golf served him well as the coach of the NBHS golf team for many years. Additionally, he was well-known for managing his family’s business, H.W. Brown Hardware, a New Brunswick-based hardware store, founded by his parents.

Upon retiring from the New Brunswick Public Schools, Mr. Brown taught for 15 years at the Rutgers University Cook College Turf Management Program. He continued to help students by actively tutoring as well as providing them with guidance for their career paths. Mr. Brown took great pleasure in attending high school reunions where he reconnected with former students and colleagues. His life was extraordinary, and he made a tremendous impact in the New Brunswick Public Schools and on the entire community.

Annually, The N. Fred Brown Memorial Scholarship offers a $1,000.00 scholarship to a New Brunswick High School graduating senior who will be attending an accredited college or university. The scholarship will be awarded to a student who has at least a “B” average in Mathematics and who seeks a career in Engineering, Education or other pursuits where their mathematical interest may be applied.
