BRISTOL-MYERS SQUIBB FUNDS SCIENCE PROGRAM
FOR NEW BRUNSWICK HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

Bristol-Myers Squibb awarded NBEF a $10,000 grant that enriched over 400 New Brunswick High School 9th and 10th grade students with learning experiences in environmental and health sciences. The project entitled “Exploring Environmental and Health Issues in an Urban Community” engaged students in a study of urban vs. rural air, soil and water quality. The students used advanced technological methods such as software linked probes to collect, analyze, and report their findings. The project’s culminating activity was the development of a website that contains the data compiled by the students at http://nbhs-envisci-bms.wikispaces.com./.

UNITED WAY OF CENTRAL JERSEY PROVIDES
NBEF WITH GIFT FOR EMERGENCY FUND

NBEF partnered with the United Way of Central Jersey to help New Brunswick High School meet its goal of implementing a uniform dress code for its student population. While 95% of the school’s families adhered to the new policy, there was a small gap (roughly 5%) who was unable to comply due to financial hardship. The United Way of Central Jersey helped to fill the gap by providing a $5,000 grant to NBEF to serve as an emergency uniform fund.

We thank the United Way of Central Jersey for their commitment and dedication to create opportunities for a better life for people living and working in Central Jersey. Also kudos to the New Brunswick Board of Education, Superintendent Richard Kaplan, administration and staff for their leadership and efforts in establishing school environments that fosters excellence.

NBEF MARKS THE SPOT FOR TARGET!

NBEF acquired a $7,500 grant from Target Foundation that will bring Young Audiences New Jersey to Lord Stirling Community School in the spring 2011. The grant provides funds for extraordinary and inspiring artists to help cultivate the educational and creative development of students. In addition, the grant offers professional development for educators by imparting innovative ways to incorporate and fuse the arts into their classrooms.
